Completed Stories

These are some of my completed works that I'm "shopping around":

The Mighty Quinn -- Longer sci-fi story about a dystopian future and what it means, ultimately, to have power -- or not.  A short excerpt from the middle:

"Listen," Darren said around a mouthful of what superficially resembled mashed potatoes.  "Kelly knows she's hot.  You know you're a math geek.  And I know I'm a biscuit shy of 300 pounds.  We all know where we belong.  We all know where we're going.  There's no big mystery here.  Just accept it and make do."

Matt paused for a second, then leaned forward and spoke quietly.

"What about Quinn?"

Darren smiled and responded in a whisper.

"Ah, well, the Quinn transcends, right?  The rules don't seem to apply."

"What if we were all like Quinn?" Matt asked.

No Limit Hold'em -- Albert Einstein is famously quoted as saying "God does not play dice with the universe."  This story asks if maybe God plays no limit Texas hold'em.  Here's the first paragraph:

Johnny raised big before the flop, even though he was staring at queen, ten, non-suited, and was on the short stack.  He and Chang were heads up and the blinds were getting big.

Unfinished Novel

I'm about 160 pages into my first attempt at a novel, In Posse (In the State of Being Possible).  Click the title to go to an excerpt (the first chapter).  Here's a short description of this Christian-based novel:

She’s a wife, a mom, a friend.  And then she’s gone.  What makes a woman like Kelly Springer – who seemingly has it all – walk away from a conference she is attending with her best friend and disappear?  Where is she running to – or what is she running from?

In Posse (In the State of Being Possible) – a suspense/thriller – tells the story of Kelly Springer, a suburban housewife, who leaves her husband, Ken, and son, Jake, with no explanation.  Her good friend, Janine, teams up with local police to track Kelly down, but Ken, by all outward appearances a stable family man, seems reluctant for his wife to be found.  The novel follows each of the main characters, as they try to come to grips with Kelly’s decision and understand her choices.  Along the way, Kelly reveals surprising information about her relationship with Ken to a stranger who takes her in.  At the same time, as Janine learns that she may have never known her best friend at all, her disgust with Kelly’s actions rekindles feelings she had for Ken.  Eventually, they all must decide for whom it is they are living – themselves, their spouses, their friends, their children – as Kelly’s and Ken’s pasts catch up with them and threaten all of their lives.

Non-fiction Manuscript

I'm about 15,000 words into a non-fiction, "inspirational" work tentatively called  Kryptonite Christianity and other Imperfect Analogies.  It's a collection of shorter writings--each one focused on an everyday item or experience (anything from CD Soundtracks to Birthday Parties) that has helped me glimpse a broader understanding of faith.  The pieces are very down-to-earth and conversational.  I've modified one short section, "Pirates," into a devotional that I've submitted to Upper Room.  For now, they've said they'll hold onto it and decide if it fits into one of their upcoming themes.  I'll post here if it gets published.

Children's and Young Adult Works

Paul Blows Out the Moon -- Young children's book about a two-year's old exciting birthday.  I have the text completed.

Signs --  Picture book -- without the pictures!  I've been trying to take photographs that might go well with the words I've already written.  It's a work in progress to say the least.

Twelve Turns Tomorrow -- I'm working on this short novel for the young adult market about a twelve-year old girl who discovers that for one day, and one day only, she has a magical gift.
